PBUUC Wedding Information
You're Getting Married!
Congratulations on your decision to wed, and if you are a same-sex couple, we rejoice that you may marry legally in Maryland now! Our ministers and members were active for many years in the organizing that finally achieved marriage equality in 2013, and we have been hosting "commitment ceremonies" for decades, so we are especially thrilled to host same-sex weddings.
Whoever you are, we're so glad you're considering Paint Branch Unitarian Universalist Church as the location for such an important occasion! Our lovely woodland setting, with views from every window and the deck, is perfect for both intimate and public ceremonies. You may choose between the larger Meeting House with its warm interior or the smaller Kelley Room overlooking our stream that flows into the Paint Branch of the Anacostia River. After the ceremony, sit together for some reflective moments in the Meditation Area facing the woods or on the streamside bench, before rejoining your guests for the reception on the deck, in the Meeting House or Kelley Room.
For those not familiar with Unitarian Universalism, one of the sources of our living tradition is wisdom from the world's religions, which means that your ceremony may draw on the practices and beliefs of your religion/s. Also, our walls are decorated with contemporary art works rather than religious symbols. Persons of all faiths, or no faith, feel "at home" in our beautiful space.
Who Will Officiate?
Our experienced minister, Rev. Diane Teichert, will help you create a ceremony that expresses and deepens the commitments you are making to one another as you wed. In your meetings, she will come to know your story and your hopes for the wedding, provide insights and practical tools for building a dynamic and lasting relationship, help you plan a meaningful ceremony incorporating your ideas, values and tastes, and guide you through the planning leading up to the big day. Or, you may provide your own officiant.
Who Will Sign the Marriage License?
In an act of solidarity with gay and lesbian couples, with the full support of the congregation, on Valentines Day 2010, Rev. Teichert announced that she would not sign Maryland marriage licenses for heterosexual couples until she could sign them for gay and lesbian couples. Straight couples were supportive of this action and willing to have their licenses signed at the courthouse. As of January 2013, she is signing marriage licenses herself, though she actually believes clergy should not function as agents of the state.
What About Music?
Our beautiful Meeting House piano may be used according to the provisions of our rental policy. Our Music Director, David Chapman, is a superb pianist and may be available to perform for your wedding. If not, he can suggest another pianist. Often used for recitals and concerts, the Meeting House is known by many area professional musicians for its excellent acoustics. We have a public address system with the capability to play CD's as well.
How Do I Get Started?
Your first step is to contact our Church Administrator, Chuck Bury, to explore dates and space. He will give you a tour of our space, help you decide how to use it, and work with you on the rental contract. If you have your own clergy or musician, you can indicate that to him. He is best reached by email or at 301-937-3666. He will put you in touch with Rev. Teichert and Mr. Chapman, at your request.
