Cory Carter and Ebeth Porter, guest speakers, with Tish Hall, Worship Associate
The Pagan Sabbat of Lammas, falling between the Summer Solstice and Fall Equinox, celebrates the grain harvest. In this high summer season we enjoy abundance in our lives, in our markets, and in our gardens. How do we welcome this abundance, and how does it affect us?
AUGUST 9 EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT RACE AND ETHNICITY, BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK
The Diversity/Anti-Racism Transformation Team, guest speakers, with Tosha O’Neal, Worship Associate
DARTT finds that personal awareness regarding matters of race and ethnicity deepens when people feel safe to engage without fear of being labeled racist or insensitive. With Worship Associate Tosha O’Neal, members and friends of DARTT will address concerns and questions previously submitted by the congregation in the continuing effort to increase openness and welcome-ness in our multi-racial, multi-cultural community.
John Bartoli and Paint Branch Poets, guest speakers, with Shantida, Worship Associate
It’s mid-August and you might be starting to feel that “Summer’s lease hath all too short a date...” as William Shakespeare would say. Maybe you’re already contemplating trading your barbecue forks and swimsuits for leaf rakes and school books. But wait, summer’s not over yet! And how can the new church year possibly begin without our annual Poetry and Music service? So, let’s get together one more time to celebrate endings, beginnings, and everything in between as we listen to the lively words of our own Paint Branch Poets and others. How can you resist?
Members of Religious Quest, guest speakers, with Marilyn Pearl, Worship Associate
From the earliest days of humanity, fire has given a comforting hearth, protection from danger, and light for the darkness. Today, with the growing aspirations of 6.7 billion humans, we have exceeded the earth’s limits. By 2020, half the world’s oil and gas will be gone. Many of the earth’s other precious resources will also be depleted and the waste from our consumption will ruin the climate and our fragile spaceship earth. We must either begin a new age of conservation and restraint or leave a legacy of depletion and want. Our service will focus on ways we can begin this new age. For continuing discussion, join us in Reverberations afterwards.
Jesse Palidofsky, guest speaker, with Don Henderson, Worship Associate
Weaving songs and stories from his Quaker spirituality together with lessons learned from his work experiences as a hospice minister at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Jesse shares with us his perspective on how to become fully present in our life. Join us for a thoughtful, challenging and meditative service on this engaging topic.
