Activities and groups at PBUUC

Flaming Chalice

We at Paint Branch Unitarian Universalist Church believe that there's more to congregational life than just attending services on Sunday mornings. We frequently sponsor various social or fun events at other times during the week where members and other friends can get to know each other in more informal settings. You don't have to be a member of PBUUC in order to participate in most social events. Here is a list of upcoming fun events at PBUUC:

Youth Group is a group of high school youth (by Unitarian Universalist and PBUUC custom, youth who grow up in our church can participate until they turn 21, but the group is always led by high school students, and most members are from 14-18) who share each other's lives, have fun together, and grow together. The high school youth themselves lead the group, with support from advisors, a Youth Coordinator, a Youth Adult Committee, and ultimately the entire congregation.

Religious Quest Discussion Group - discusses books, articles or videos of a broadly religious, philosophical, political, anthropological or sociological nature to discover what these offerings have to say about being human religiously and what ethical guidance they may offer. Annual Paint Branch Women's Retreat: The women of Paint Branch are involved in all of the church activities, but this one is just for us. Since March of 2006 we have had an annual one-day retreat on-site at Paint Branch, scheduled at the end of February or the beginning of March. Our retreats include two hot, fresh vegetarian meals (breakfast and lunch) some activities that include everyone, and lots of short workshops led by women in our congregation. Past workshops have included knitting, simplifying, making fused glass jewelry, dancing, singing, painting on silk, and much more. Some daughters have accompanied their mothers and had a good time, and we have been able to arrange childcare as needed. Every year is a little bit different. There is a listserve for retreat participants and interested women. It gets moderate activity ( up to a dozen messages a month) from October through February and almost no activity for the rest of the year. To subscribe to our listserve, send an email to <pbuucwomen-subscribe@yahoogroups.com> and put "subscribe" in the subject line.

Daytimers is a group of retired folks who do things together during the weekday. Outings include trips to museums, eating at various restaurants, and serving food to the homeless. For more information or a complete schedule of upcoming events, contact the Church Office.

TWedHULK (The Third Wednesday Hyattsville Unitarian Lunch Klub) started in the early 1970s and continues to gather at 12:30 p.m. at various area restaurants. Forthcoming locations are announced in the newsletter and in the Sunday order of services. Reservations are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. With a loosely operating reservations system, we enjoy this monthly sharing of news and views. Anyone who is free at lunchtime on the third Wednesday of the month is invited to join the group. Contact Ruth Bond.

Bridge Group meets once a month in a member's home, usually on the third Saturday of the month. While there is more emphasis on socializing than serious bridge playing, a basic knowledge of the game is expected. It is open to all--singles and couples. One dollar per person is collected, with half of the money going to the host and the other half for prizes. Most people donate an additional dollar, which goes to one of the church's projects to help the homeless. .

Paint Branch Men's Fellowship builds a community among men through monthly meetings. Contact John Bartoli.

Paint Branch Nature Spirituality Circle explores Earth-centered religions of various traditions. We celebrate the seasons and honor God-Goddess within all and beyond all, in a multitude of forms. We hold Circle rituals and other events at members' homes or at the Church. We also occasionally hold public rituals and Enrichment Hour events. All are welcome to join this Circle.

SINKS & DINKS: SINKS & DINKS is a group of adults who get together to do fun and social stuff. Our membership includes adults who are Single Income with No Kids, Dual Income with No Kids, and parents who want to go out without the kids. [keep on site or not?]
