On the heels of its successful effort to reach out to the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered community, PBUUC is now focusing its efforts on attracting more racial and ethnic minorities. Paint Branch has been interested in race relations for some time; expressing this through a commitment to racial diversity in our church; by hosting the annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Celebration and the Warm Nights program; and by sending several members to a UUA-led Jubilee Workshop in May, 1996. Shortly after the Jubilee Workshop, the Committee on Racial Justice was formed to begin to work more formally on the issue of anti-racism. Participants are committed to working to rid racism within ourselves, our church, and the larger community. The hope is that out of this discussion will come ideas for how we, as a congregation, might address the twin issues of racism and diversity. Click here to read actual responses from members of the congregation that were written during the January 16, 2000 Sunday services on "Our Commitments to Carry on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Legacy."
